Marc Jacobs seems to have got back into a comfortable routine of churning out reliably good bags at realistic prices with all his trademark functional chic elements firmly in place. Great news for those looking for a practical designer bag without too much seasonal fuss!
The Preppy Natasha bag is a recent addition to his range that is bound to fly off the shelves, and has got the urban/sophisticated look just right. Gold hardware against black make it on-trend yet timeless, and MJ’s sense of fun is evident in the large sized tags and ‘smiley’ sloping zip pull at the front. This is a piece I’d really love to help me finish off my early spring city chic look right now, and I can imagine carrying it right through until the next one.

Available in 6 different colours, the Marc Jacobs Geo Ring Set is one of the latest offerings from his Special Items collection. Priced at just USD11a set, they are are perfect fun accessory for summer; bright, youthful and bubbly. And because it only costs USD11, you won’t even feel a thing if you should accidentally lose a couple along the way. UnfortunatelySpecial Items are not available in Singapore, but for those who are really keen, check out Marc by Marc Jacobs Causeway Bay in Hong Kong (nearest to Singapore), along with selected boutiques in London, New York City and San Francisco.

And for the boys, check out the new Marc by Marc Jacobs Fist Duffle, which also comes in 6 different colours. Besides Brown, Gray, Black and Khaki, it also comes in my favourite shades Olive and Navy. For justUSD28 each it’s pretty spartan and straightforward, with the most minimal of finishings that’s great for the gym or short weekend trips.

An iconic fashion defines a decade or a generation with its look. And while it’s nearly impossible to declare a contemporary fashion or designer “iconic” while it’s still in style, if I had to make a guess as to who history will look back on to define the early 21st Century, it has to be Marc Jacobs.
Jacobs is already something of a modern icon. Though the grunge movement had its first stirrings in Seattle in the late 1980s when bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden started cropping up on Sub Pop records, it was Marc Jacobs who grabbed the grunge look by its greasy hair and flannel and sent it down Perry Ellis’ runway in 1992. Yes, my fashion history fledglings, your beloved oh-so-chic-and-pulled-together Marc Jacobs was responsible for sending supermodels stomping down the catwalk in Doc Martins and stocking caps.
Fast forward nearly 20 years and Jacobs has cleaned up his act a bit. His 2010 Marc Jacobs collection is tailored and structured, but doesn’t lose its signature Marc Jacobs quirk. And some of Jacobs’ contemporary pieces are already reaching icon status, especially in his fragrance line. Remember how unique Marc Jacobs “Daisy” smelled when it hit the market in 2007? Now you can catch a whiff of the modern classic on everyone and their sister, and the signature plastic floral bottle is displayed right alongside Chanel No. 5.
